Chapter 9

My new friends left after our conversation. Everyone was concerned for my health and wanted to let me rest. I was eager to begin, but even I had to admit I was in no shape for it that night. We agreed to meet the next afternoon at the house the three used as a base of operations.

“It’s a friend’s house,” Stan explained. “He and his wife spend most of the year travelling. Back before my life became so dramatic, I used to housesit for them, get the mail, that sort of thing. Now, it’s where we live. We moved there after we killed Thomas. It seemed a good place for us to stay since it’s not in any of our names.”

“It’s not bad,” I said. “But Bloodmoon knows about it, doesn’t she?”

“Yes,” Stan confirmed.

“It’ll do for now, but you’ll want to move somewhere new, and soon.”

The three weren’t convinced.

“She’s evil. I know you have your doubts, but at least take a minimum of precautions. If I’m wrong you had to move for nothing, but if I’m right I could be saving your lives.”

They couldn’t argue with that.

The plan was to pool our resources and get a new place together.

That night I did my best to rest up and recover, but I could only sleep so much. Using my tablet, I visited the fearthenight.info site. Logging in to the site’s community boards with my original login and password, I sent a private message to Madame Bloodmoon.

“Nikki,” I wrote.

“Nice try sending your new trio of hunter pawns after Brock. I wonder, had his absence been noted already? Were you using them to see who might have taken up residence in his condo, or did you know all along that it was me?”

I ended the message with, “Still breathing, Hunter.”

This message confirmed I was back. But I figured any response from Nikki was likely to be enough to incriminate her in the eyes of my new friends. For my own safety, I didn’t send the message until I was ready to leave Brock’s condo.

I took a taxi to meet up with the others, loading all the things I wanted from Brock’s into its trunk. Of course, Elizabeth was coming with me, too. I did what I could to disguise her unusual appearance, putting her in a long coat and hat again. But when she got into the taxi, the driver looked at her with wide eyes for a moment, then frowned and was about to speak. I stopped him with a twenty dollar bill. He raised no objections after that.
